History Harold Meade Company

Meade’s Discount Doors & More opened in June 2007 after Nichole Meade decided to take her years of surplus brokering, wholesaling, and retailing and open a store of her own in the Atlanta Metro area.

The Meade family has been in the millwork business for over 50 years and over 3 generations. Harold Meade began selling lumber for a local hardware store in Gate City, VA in 1950. He then started the Harold Meade Company in 1960 in Bulls Gap, TN. He was the first to put kitchen cabinets (on consignment because the company didn’t really believe it would work) into what was then a small three store lumberyard called Lowe’s. Of course, his business began to grow. Then his son, Larry Meade, came on board in 1964 and helped his father run the company as President.

Over the years the relationship grew between the quickly expanding Lowe’s and the Harold Meade Company until HMC was building over a 1,000 doors a day, supplying cabinets, tubs, sinks, etc to Lowe’s, 84 Lumber, Home Depot and many other home improvement chains across the US. Harold Meade Company also opened an import branch called ManWing in China in 1981.

Larry Meade and his son Scott Meade then began a local chain of door shops in the Tri-Cities, TN area in 1993. During this time, Larry Meade also consulted for major glass and door manufacturers around the US.

In 2000, Larry Meade moved to Atlanta and “semi-retired”, but began brokering salvage and surplus building materials using his many contacts in the building materials business. He had found his calling and convinced his children to give it a try. In 2002, Scott Meade and Todd Meade also began brokering and decided to open a salvage store in Griffin, GA while focusing on building doors for other salvage stores in the US. Nichole Meade became Scott and Todd’s part-time partner and used this opportunity to learn the business of salvage and surplus building materials.

Finally in 2003, Nichole Meade became a full-time building materials broker after 12 years as a VP in an advertising agency in Atlanta. And in July 2007, Nichole Meade decided to strike out on her own and open the retail store Meade’s Discount Doors & More in the Tucker area of Atlanta, GA.

The mother and wife, Paulette Meade, is very thankful that she is not in the “biz”!
